Koodiyattam (Malayalam : കൂടിയാട്ടം, IAST: Kūṭiyāṭṭaṃ) or Kutiyattam is a form of Sanskrit theatre traditionally performed in the state of Kerala, India. Performed in the Sanskrit language in Hindu temples, it is 2000 years old. It is officially recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Origins Koodiyattam [kutiyattam], meaning "combined acting," signifies Sanskrit drama presented in the traditional style in temple theatres of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is the only surviving specimen of the ancient Sanskrit theatre. It has an attested history of a thousand years in Kerala, but its origin and evolution are shrouded in mystery. Kutiyattam and chakyar koothu were among the dramatized dance worship services in temples of ancient India, particularly Tamilakam (modern-day Tamil Nadu and Kerala). Both kootiyattam and chakyar koothu find several mentions in ancient sangam literature of south and also in the epigraphs belonging to subsequent Pallava, Chera, Chola periods in Tamilnadu. Inscriptions related to the dramatized dance worship services like koodiyattam and chakyar koothu are available in temples at Tanjore,Tiruvidaimaruthur, Vedaranyam,Tiruvarur, and Omampuliyur. They were treated as an integral part of worship services alongside the singing of tevaram and prabandam hymns. Vietnam Colony is a 1992 Malayalam film written and directed by Siddique-Lal . With Mohanlal, Innocent, Kanaka and KPAC Lalitha appearing in lead roles, this film was a huge hit in theatres. G. Krishnamoorthy (Mohanlal), hailing from an orthodox Tamil Brahmin community gets a job with Calcutta Constructions as supervisor. Calcutta Company has been in efforts to restructure their land by vacating an illegal colony lying adjacent to its premise. Popularly known as Vietnam Colony, it is inhabited by mainly daily laborers. The company has been in efforts to demolish the colony for long time, but failed to do so. The colony is now under the rule a few hardcore criminals to whom the residents have to pay specific amount every week. Now, Krishnamoorthy is appointed by company to evacuate the colony, by dealing with these criminals. Vietnam Colony was produced and distributed by Appachan for the banner of Swargachitra. Mani Suchitra received Kerala State Film Award for Best Art Director for the film. The film ran for 200 days in Kerala and was the third biggest hit of the year. The film was also remade in Tamil with Prabhu in the lead role.
